More talk (still no action) on spending big on transportation

You are going to hear more about this soon, but today Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., held a press conference in San Francisco to press for a so-called second bailout, one that would pump billions of dollars directly into the economy by building more bridges, paving more roads and the like.

Quoting transportation department boilerplate, she said every billion dollars spent on transportation infrastructure creates or keeps 35,000 jobs in construction, engineering or similar industries.

Democrats in the U.S. House have promised to fight for another bailout plan that would fast-track hundreds of construction projects across the nation.

Others argue that even projects that are ready to go but need funds would take too long to get moving for the spending to have any immediate impact on the economy.
